On November 20, 1989, the Convention on the Rights of the Child was announced by the UN. Although this was good news, it was far from good enough as the convention has serious shortcomings. After 31 years of debates and disputes about ambiguities and shortcomings, the Convention on the Rights of the Child became Swedish law on the first of January 2020. Back then, we wrote an article (appeal-2019, http://childrenfirstnow.com/en/archives/355 ) and emphasized on several ambiguities on a number of points (e.g. articles 8, 11, 14, 20, 24, 29, 30) which allow the parents’ cultural and religious customs to influence children significantly.
We, at Barnen Först (Children First) and everyone else who supports our proposal, want the Convention on the Rights of the Child to be an effective tool for defending children’s rights against various forms of discrimination in the name of religion. The fight against religious schools that segregate children from secular society, the fight against religious symbols such as hijab on female children that lays the foundation for gender apartheid, and the fight against harmful practices such as circumcision of girls and boys, have taken a step forward. We have not solely relied on the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Rather, we have pointed out its shortcomings and today there are more and more people and rights activists who realize that the Convention sacrifices children’s rights for political, economic, cultural, and ideological interests.
Criticism of the serious shortcomings of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is expanding:
- ”The issue of Circumcision of boys was raised by the Convention on the Rights of the Child in November 2020 (SOU 2020: 63), where it came to the conclusion that the government may need to review whether Swedish rules fully comply with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. On circumcision, under Article 24, the inquiry writes (page 1019)”
- “Barnombudsmannen (The Children’s Ombudsman) believes that circumcision should only be carried out when the child can give informed consent.”
- “Rädda Barnen’s (Save the Children) response to the referral New rules for schools with a denominational focus, emphasizes that it is a serious shortcoming that the inquiry has not carried out a child impact assessment and also the right to religious freedom and that children should be allowed to give their opinion based on age and maturity”
These measures, as we mentioned, is a step forward, but we still must continue our struggle for the rights of children to be respected first instead of their religious indoctrination and coercion.
Everyone who cares about children’s rights: Demand the politicians and the government to put the best interests of children before religious orders with roots in the Stone Age!
The Convention on the Rights of the Child needs to be updated to save children from parents’ religious pressure.
