Another woman condemned to
be stoned in Sudan.
Layla Ibrahim Issa, a
23-year-old woman, has been sentenced to death by stoning in Khartoum.
She has a six-month-old baby, and is reportedly incarcerated in Omdurman
Women’s Prison along with her child.
This has been the second stoning
sentence issued within a short time in Sudan. This latest report comes
shortly after news of the release of Intisar Sharif Abdallah, whose
stoning sentence caused international uproar and protests and was
finally revoked as a result of these pressures, allowing Intisar to be
freed from prison.
The 23-year-old Layla Ibrahim
Issa was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery on 10 July 2012 in a
Khartoum court presided over by Judge Imad Shamoun. She had no access to
a lawyer.
Sudan is one of the few
countries where the stoning penalty is enshrined in law. The Sudanese
President Omar al-Bashir, whom the International Criminal Court in The
Hague has indicted for crimes against humanity, has assiduously defended
stoning.
The International Committee
Against Stoning emphatically condemns the Sudanese government’s shameful
efforts to promote stoning, and calls upon the public to launch
widespread international protests demanding the immediate revocation of
the stoning sentence against Layla Ibrahim Issa.
